Crossing Borders: The Intersection of the Monarch Butterfly, Genetic Identity and Immigrant Rights

Monarch butterfly migration is perceived as one of the most spectacular phenomena in nature, when the monarchs migrate each summer and autumn to and from overwintering sites across Canada, the United States and Mexico. For generations, immigrant rights activists have perceived and used the butterfly as a symbol of fluid and peaceful migration, representing the resilience of immigrants and the human right to move freely across borders. In the same way that the monarch displays its colors and isn’t hiding, the immigrant should be visible and unafraid. The importance of the butterfly in society is not only symbolic and mystical, but now also very tangible.

The Monarch Triptych provides us with three different stories about humans who transform into Monarch butterflies.
